I found out long ago
It’s a long way down the Holiday Road…
This catchy tune written by Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is the theme
from National Lampoon’s Vacation movie. When we think of “vacationing” comedy
films, the adventures of the Griswold family is what comes to mind.
We embarked with this zany family in 1983 in Vacation as they ventured west
in a quest to conquer “Wally World.” In 1985, the Griswold’s
won a trip overseas, in European Vacation. During Christmas 1989, Clark,
Ellen, Rusty and Audrey allowed their relatives to invade their suburban Chicago
home in Christmas Vacation. Finally, the Griswold’s hit “The
Strip” with laughter in 1997’s Vegas Vacation.
There are a few noteworthy comedies where a leisurely vacation turns into
mayhem. In the 1985 film, Summer Rental, John Candy starred as a traffic
controller who has a breakdown. He takes time off from his stressful job
and heads to Florida with his family.
John Candy and Dan Aykroyd teamed up in 1988 in The Great Outdoors. A man’s
hope for a peaceful family vacation in the woods is shattered when the annoying
brother-in-law drops in.
Robin Williams starred in the 1986 movie Club Paradise. Williams played
an injured firefighter who retires to a small Caribbean island. He befriends
Ernest Reed, together they partner up and run Club Paradise.
Captain Ron is a film from 1992, which starred Kurt Russell. A Chicago
family inherits a yacht formerly owned by Clark Gable. They sail it from
island of Ste. Pomme de Terre to Miami and hire Captain Ron to take the controls.
The 1989 comedy Weekend at Bernie’s was set on a beautiful tropical
island. Two young executives create the illusion that their murdered boss,
Bernie Lomax, is alive in order to avoid being questioned about his demise.
What About Bob? (1991) starred Bill Murray as a highly manipulative obsessive
compulsive who tracks down his successful psychiatrist during his family vacation.
In 1997, Odd Couple actors Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon teamed-up in Out
to Sea. Two old men board a cruise ship with the intent of defrauding rich
widows.
Lovewrecked (2005) was the adventure of a woman who is marooned on a beach
with her rock and roll idol.
