Fall in Love with Alpacas | Jake Herbert. . .Heading for Success
Stars Dance to Benefit CF

Alpacas are members of the camelid family. Their mild manners and inquisitive personality make them a joy to their owners. There are two breed types: Huacaya, a dense-fluffy fleece with a crimpy look or Suri with long silk like fleece that clings together giving the appearance of long flowing locks. This fleece is shorn once a year and can be spun into yarn, felted or used to make woven clothing.
Alpacas stand approximately 36 inches tall and require minimal amounts of food. Generally, feeding on fresh hay and small amounts of grain each day makes alpacas easy to care for. Weighing between 100 and 200 pounds gives the opportunity to raise approximately 6 to 10 alpacas per acre.
BENEFITS
There are many reasons why so many people across the United States are investing in alpacas. Ownership is not limited to doctors, lawyers, accountants and veterinarians, but also city dwellers and families everywhere. Many have decided that the alpaca business is right for them.
The Basics
- Alpaca breeding is an alternative lifestyle with strong income.
- Alpaca farming is a fulfilling lifestyle.
- Alpaca ownership can include 2 alpacas or thousands as a livestock industry.
- Alpacas create a commodity that is both rare and in demand worldwide.
- Alpaca fleece makes a luxurious product known in fashion centers and textile mills around the world.
Tax Benefits
- All expenses connected to the venture can be written off against your income, if raising them for profit (veterinarian costs, feed, hay, equipment and other start-up costs).
- Depreciation of tangible property can be written off also (breeding stock, the farm, fencing).
- These deductions help shelter current cash flow.

Jake Herbert…Heading for Success On and Off the Mat!
By Rosemary Garrity
Is this guy for real? You can’t help but wonder how a young man can be so talented, personable and motivated at 23, but Jake Herbert, a North Allegheny graduate and Wexford resident, happens to be all of these. Herbert attends Northwestern University, where he is a three-time All-Academic American and NCAA champion, majoring in communications. Herbert, a 185-pound wrestler, at one time was ranked tenth in the world in his weight category, according to the latest international freestyle rankings. According to Jake, the ratings change, but his aspirations remain high. As you can imagine, his parents, Kelly and Jim, are very proud of their son. Herbert says that his father, a great wrestler himself, got him interested in the sport.
His ultimate goal is to win a gold medal in the Olympics some day. Last year he took an Olympics red shirt from Northwestern to try to achieve this dream. At 23, he would have been a very young Olympian, as most Olympic wrestlers are older.
Herbert’s training is very intense, with workouts scheduled twice a day at times, four days on, one day off. He trains at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) in Naperville, Illinois, with other elite wrestlers. At the Olympic trials, Jake lost to Andy Hrovat, a close friend, and someone he had beaten twice before. Hrovat is 28 years old and Herbert wishes him the very best. “I’m very happy for him. He’s a great guy and a terrific wrestler,” Herbert said.
The disappointment of not making the team hasn’t altered his goal of going to the 2012 Olympics. In order to do that, he plans to continue competing as much as possible. In July, at the University World Games held in Greece this year, he won a bronze medal.
In the fall, he’ll return to North-western to earn his degree, and of course, train and compete in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. According to Herbert, “Every year I want to reach the highest pinnacle I can.”
