Trivia Connection - June 2007

By Paula Green

The game of golf is not only a sport but a relaxing, recreational activity enjoyed by both men and women alike. It is played by more than 26 million Americans and many more worldwide.  Its exact origins are unclear.  Modern golf is considered to be a Scottish invention.

The first game of golf for which records survive was played at Bruntsfield Links, in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1456, which is now The Royal Burgess Golfing Society.

Annually, there are several men’s and women’s majors tournaments that are held.  The women’s golf majors championships are: Kraft Nabisco Championship, LPGA Championship, U.S. Women’s Open and the Women’s British Open.

The four men’s majors tournaments that take place are:  The Masters, U.S. Open, The Open (referred to as the British Open) and the PGA Championship.

The Pittsburgh area will have the honor of hosting the U.S. Open Championship, June 11-17, at Oakmont Country Club.  This is the eighth time that Oakmont has had the pleasure of hosting this prestigious event.

The first U.S. Open Men’s Championship was played on Oct. 4, 1895, on a nine-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island.  It was a 36-hole competition and was played in a single day.  Ten professionals and one amateur entered.  The winner was a 21 year-old Englishman named Horace Rawlins.  He received $150 cash plus a $50 gold medal, and his club received the Open Championship trophy.

The U.S. Open is sponsored by the USGA (the United States Golf Association).  It is held each June, and the final round is always played on the third Sunday of that month, coinciding with Father’s Day.  There will certainly be a lot of dads playing golf on their special day, and there are many courses to choose from.  In 2005 Golf Digest calculated that there were nearly 32,000 golf courses in the world, approximately half of them are in the United States.

So now that we have faired-our-way through the greens, we need to see if your golf knowledge is up to par.
