Teacher Extraordinaire
During our journey through
life, many people cross our
path bringing happiness and
often times creating wonderful memories,
but sometimes there are those
individuals who not only touch our
lives, but also touch our hearts.
Even though Mrs. Ruth Butler, a
McCandless resident, began her
teaching career later in life, she has
successfully touched the lives of her
students and their parents while
working as a substitute teacher in the
North Allegheny school district, and
teaching full-time for Eden Christian
Academy. At Eden Christian
Academy, she taught 5th and 6th
grade English, reading and spelling,
as well as 5th grade Bible study.
Additionally, Mrs. Butler served as
the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade computer
teacher, as well as conducting workshops
in the summer for North
Allegheny’s Summer Academy, and
Eden’s Writing Camp.
Mrs. Butler graduated from
Duquesne University with a Bachelor
of Science degree in elementary education,
but her love of teaching and
interaction with learning challenged
students prompted her to continue
her training at La Roche College to
earn her certification in Special
Education in May 2007. “My passion
is tutoring and teaching reading,
writing/English, with a particular
interest in dyslexia,” Butler said.
Over the years she was influential in
teaching some of the most challenged
learning students in the area.
“In September, I am embarking
on a new adventure,” Butler said. “I
will be teaching writing and grammar
at the Blackburn Study Center in
McCandless.” While she is teaching,
she will concentrate on her tutoring
and hopefully provide homebound
instructions for kids that are ill and
cannot attend school. Additionally,
Mrs. Butler offers scholarships to students
who are unable to pay for their
education so no child will be left
without an opportunity to learn. “I
give scholarships each year to children
that cannot afford to be tutored
in the hopes that I can give these kids
an edge and to show them that they
are valuable and that they can succeed,”
Butler said. She also selects a
student with a strong learning potential
who isn’t being tutored to help
that student expand their educational
backgroun.
Most teachers are dedicated to
their profession; however, Mrs.
Butler definitely goes the extra mile
because of her sincere love of children,
and her desire to make a difference.
