Avonworth School District |
|
By Paula Green
For nearly three decades, Mary Ann Zieger has been working in an occupation
that she thoroughly enjoys, teaching. She is a fifth grade special education
inclusion teacher in the Avonworth School District. Prior to that, she
held a teaching position with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIC). “I
love teaching. It really has been a rewarding experience for me,” Zieger
said.
She is currently in her first year of her state presidency with Alpha Delta
Kappa. This group is an international honorary organization of women educators
dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.
“Alpha Delta Kappa was founded back in 1947 by a female teacher who
was interested in promoting the teaching profession. Today there are seven
regions in the United States with 46,000 members. In the state of Pennsylvania,
there are 16 various chapters. We belong to the Delta chapter,” Zieger
said.
The organization is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. There are
nearly 1,600 chapters located in towns and cities in every state in the U.S.,
and around the world in Australia, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
“I have enjoyed being the Pennsylvania state president. I have
done quite a bit of traveling and have made some great friends as a result of
my ventures. It is a generous organization that believes in giving back
to the community. Alpha Delta Kappa annually contributes $30,000 to the
Susan G. Komen Foundation and $30,000 to St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” Zieger
said.
During the summer when school isn’t in session, Zieger spends her time
tutoring students who are in need of some extra academic support. This
past summer she tutored seven students. She also manages to get in a few
rounds of golf playing with her weekly league.
Zieger is a McKees Rocks native, and she attended Duquesne University, where
she received a dual certification in Elementary Education and Special Education.
In 1995 she was honored with the Anne Sullivan Award by the Allegheny Intermediate
Unit. She was bestowed with this honor for going over and above her normal
teaching duties.
She resides in Franklin Park with her husband Frank. As for her future,
Zieger plans to continue her involvement with Alpha Delta Kappa. She has
recently been asked to be the historian of the northeastern region.
“My experience with the sorority has been really wonderful and
